The Call to Listen and Obey

Day 188 of Bible in One Year Devotion:

Today’s readings draw our attention to the themes of deliverance, obedience, and faithfulness. Each passage underscores the importance of listening to God’s voice and following His commands for a life of blessing and peace.

Psalms 81:1-7 is a call to worship and remember God’s deliverance. God reminds His people of the time He rescued them from Egypt, removing their burdens and setting them free. He calls them to listen and obey His voice, promising to fill their lives with good things if they turn to Him. This passage is a beautiful reminder that God is not only our deliverer but also our provider. When we heed His voice and follow His ways, we experience His blessings and freedom.

In Acts 25:1-22, we see Paul’s trial before Festus. Despite being falsely accused, Paul stands firm in his faith and defense, appealing to Caesar as his right as a Roman citizen. Festus, unsure of how to proceed, seeks advice from King Agrippa. This narrative highlights Paul’s unwavering commitment to his mission and the courage to proclaim the truth despite opposition. It encourages us to remain steadfast in our faith and trust God’s plan, even when facing trials and uncertainties.

2 Kings 12 recounts the reign of Joash, who repairs the temple with the guidance of Jehoiada the priest. Joash’s efforts to restore the temple reflect his initial commitment to God’s ways. However, after Jehoiada’s death, Joash turns away from God, leading to his eventual downfall. This story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of sustained faithfulness and the dangers of straying from God’s commands.

2 Kings 13 tells of Jehoahaz and Joash, kings of Israel, and their struggles against the oppression of Aram. Despite their unfaithfulness, God shows mercy and delivers Israel through a series of victories granted to Joash. This passage demonstrates God’s grace and willingness to rescue His people even when they fall short, encouraging us to seek His help and return to Him in times of trouble.

2 Kings 14:1-22 describes the reign of Amaziah, king of Judah, who initially follows God’s commands but later turns away, leading to his defeat and capture. Amaziah’s story underscores the need for consistent obedience to God. It teaches us that partial obedience or turning to God only in times of need is not enough; true faithfulness requires a wholehearted and continual commitment to His ways.

As we reflect on these passages, we are reminded of God’s deliverance and the importance of listening to His voice. Whether it’s the call to worship in Psalms, Paul’s steadfast faith in Acts, or the lessons from the kings of Israel and Judah, we see the significance of obedience and faithfulness. God desires to free us from our burdens and fill our lives with His blessings, but this requires us to listen and follow Him wholeheartedly.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for being our deliverer and provider. Help us to listen to Your voice and follow Your commands with unwavering faithfulness. May we always seek Your guidance and walk in Your ways. Fill our lives with Your blessings as we commit ourselves to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Choosing Life: Embracing God's Covenant

 

Dear brethren, 

In Deuteronomy 30:19, we are presented with a profound choice: between life and death, blessing and curse. This verse encapsulates the essence of God's covenant with His people—a covenant rooted in love, obedience, and the promise of abundant life.

As we explore Psalms 48:1-8, we are reminded of the greatness of God and His unwavering presence in the midst of His people. The psalmist exalts Zion as the city of God, a symbol of His faithfulness and protection.

In Luke 19:11-44, we witness Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem and His subsequent lament over the city's rejection of Him. This passage serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of rejecting God's salvation and the importance of recognizing the time of God's visitation.

Turning back to the words of Moses in Deuteronomy 30:11-20, we are urged to choose life by obeying God's commandments. Despite the challenges and temptations we may face, God's Word is near to us, accessible and attainable, guiding us toward righteousness and blessing.

Finally, in Deuteronomy 31:1-29, we see Moses passing the torch of leadership to Joshua, encouraging him and the Israelites to remain faithful to God's covenant. Even amidst uncertainty and transition, God assures His people of His presence and faithfulness, reminding them to be strong and courageous.

Today, let us heed the call to choose life by embracing God's covenant wholeheartedly. May we walk in obedience, trust in His promises, and remain steadfast in our commitment to follow Him. In doing so, we will experience the fullness of life that comes from walking in fellowship with our loving and faithful God.

Empowered for Mission: Answering the Call

Today's reflection centers on Luke 9:1-2, where Jesus commissions His twelve disciples, empowering them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. This passage highlights the authority and responsibility given to believers to carry out the work of the Gospel.

In Psalms 40:1-8, David expresses his trust in God's faithfulness and deliversance, declaring his willingness to do God's will and proclaim His righteousness.

Luke 8:40-56 records two miraculous healings performed by Jesus: the healing of the woman with the issue of blood and the raising of Jairus' daughter. These accounts demonstrate Jesus' compassion and power to bring healing and restoration to those in need.

Luke 9:1-9 continues the narrative as Jesus sends out the twelve disciples, instructing them to take nothing for their journey except the essentials. He empowers them to preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick, affirming their authority and the importance of relying on God's provision.

Numbers 31:25-54 describes the division of spoils from the Midianite war and the distribution of tribute to the Israelites and the Levites. This passage underscores the importance of gratitude and stewardship in acknowledging God's provision and blessings.

Numbers 32 narrates the request of the tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half of the tribe of Manasseh, to settle on the east side of the Jordan River. Despite their desire for land outside the promised land, Moses challenges them to fulfill their commitment to assist their fellow Israelites in conquering the land of Canaan.

As we reflect on these passages, let us recognize the authority and power given to us as believers to proclaim the Gospel and bring healing to a broken world. Like David, may we trust in God's faithfulness and commit ourselves to doing His will. And let us remember the importance of stewardship and commitment to the mission of God, ensuring that we are fully engaged in His kingdom work wherever He leads us.

Bearing Fruit of Repentance: Embracing God's Call to Transformation

Dear brothers and sisters, 

Today's reflection draws from Luke 3:11, where John the Baptist exhorts the crowd, saying, "Whoever has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and whoever has food should do the same." This verse highlights John's call to practical acts of compassion and generosity as evidence of true repentance and readiness for the coming kingdom of God.

In Psalms 35:19-28, David continues to petition God for deliverance from his adversaries, acknowledging his own innocence and pleading for justice to be executed on his behalf.

Luke 3:1-22 recounts the ministry of John the Baptist, who preaches a message of repentance and prepares the way for the coming of Jesus Christ. John calls the people to turn from their sins and bear fruit in keeping with repentance, baptizing them in the Jordan River as a sign of their commitment to change.

Numbers 9:15-23 describes the cloud that covered the tabernacle, signifying the presence of God among His people. When the cloud lifted, the Israelites would break camp and journey onward, following God's guidance and direction.

Numbers 10 outlines the instructions for making and using silver trumpets to signal various gatherings and movements of the Israelites during their travels in the wilderness. These trumpets served as a means of communication and coordination among the tribes, ensuring order and unity in their journey.

Numbers 11:1-3 records the complaints of the Israelites about their hardships in the wilderness, prompting God's anger and the outbreak of fire among them. This passage serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of discontentment and ingratitude, even in the midst of God's provision and presence.

As we reflect on these passages, let us heed John the Baptist's call to bear fruit of repentance in our lives, demonstrating genuine transformation and readiness for God's kingdom. May we also trust in God's guidance and provision as we journey through life, following His lead and remaining obedient to His commands. And let us guard against the dangers of complaint and discontentment, choosing instead to cultivate hearts of gratitude and trust in God's faithfulness.

The Call to Diligence and Commitment: Surrendering to God's Will

Today's reflection centers on Proverbs 6:10-11, which warns against the consequences of laziness and procrastination: "A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man." This passage reminds us of the importance of diligence and commitment in our pursuit of God's will.

Proverbs 6:1-11 provides further insight into the dangers of laziness and the need for proactive effort in life. The wise are encouraged to learn from the ant, which gathers food in the summer and prepares for the winter, demonstrating foresight and industry.

In Mark 8:14-38, Jesus warns His disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod, symbolizing the dangers of hypocrisy and worldly influence. He then challenges them to take up their cross and follow Him, emphasizing the cost of discipleship and the need for wholehearted commitment to God's kingdom.

Mark 9:1 reveals Jesus' promise of the coming kingdom of God, offering hope and encouragement to His followers as they journey with Him. This glimpse of the future serves as a reminder of the ultimate reward awaiting those who faithfully serve and follow Christ.

Exodus 37 and Exodus 38 detail the construction of the articles for the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, the table for the bread of the Presence, the lampstand, and the altar of burnt offering. These passages highlight the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication required to fulfill God's instructions for worship.

As we reflect on these passages, let us heed the call to diligence and commitment in our walk with God. May we be like the wise ant, diligently preparing for the future and faithfully serving God's kingdom. And may we embrace the challenge of taking up our cross and following Christ, surrendering our lives fully to His will and trusting in His promise of eternal reward.

THE INVITATION AND THE CHOSEN: RESPONDING TO GOD'S CALL WITH REVERENCE AND GRATITUDE

Today's devotion delves into the theme of responding to God's call with reverence and gratitude, drawing wisdom from Psalms 18:7–15, Matthew 21:33–46, Matthew 22:1–14, Job 25, Job 26, Job 27, Job 28, and Job 29.

The Majesty and Power of God (Psalms 18:7–15): Psalms 18:7–15 depicts the majestic power of God, who thunders from the heavens and delivers His people from their enemies. The psalmist extols God's greatness and protection, highlighting His sovereignty over creation.

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants (Matthew 21:33–46): In Matthew 21:33–46, Jesus shares the parable of the wicked tenants, warning of the consequences of rejecting God's messengers and His Son. This passage underscores the importance of acknowledging Jesus as the cornerstone and responding to His authority with obedience and reverence.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matthew 22:1–14): In Matthew 22:1–14, Jesus tells the parable of the wedding feast, illustrating God's invitation to all but the necessity of responding with readiness and reverence. The parable emphasises the importance of being clothed in righteousness and prepared for the kingdom of heaven.

Bildad's Response to Job (Job 25): In Job 25, Bildad delivers a brief speech, asserting the greatness and purity of God. Despite his limited understanding, Bildad acknowledges the sovereignty of God and the need for reverence in His presence.

Job's Reflections on God's Power (Job 26): In Job 26, Job responds to Bildad, acknowledging God's power and sovereignty over creation. He marvels at the mysteries of God's works, expressing reverence and awe in His presence.

Job's Final Defence of His Integrity (Job 27, Job 28, Job 29): In Job 27, Job reaffirms his integrity and righteousness, despite his suffering. He reflects on the fate of the wicked and the fleeting nature of worldly wealth. Job 28 explores the search for wisdom and its ultimate source in God, while Job 29 reminisces on his former prosperity and honour.

The Invitation and the Chosen: Responding to God's Call with Reverence and Gratitude The title encapsulates the essence of today's message. Matthew 22:14 serves as a reminder that while many are called to God's kingdom, it is those who respond with reverence and readiness who are chosen. The devotion explores the themes of God's sovereignty and invitation in Psalms and Matthew, alongside Job's reflections on the power and wisdom of God. As we contemplate our response to God's call, may we do so with reverence and gratitude, prepared to embrace His invitation with open hearts. Amen.

A CALL TO RIGHTEOUS LIVING: LOVE, OBEDIENCE, AND TRUST

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today's devotion invites us to reflect on Psalms 5, Matthew 5:21–42, Genesis 11:10–32, Genesis 12, and Genesis 13—a collection of scriptures that guide us in navigating the complexities of life with love, obedience, and trust in God.

In Psalms 5, we find a prayer for guidance and deliverance, setting the tone for our reflection on righteous living. Matthew 5:21–42 presents Jesus' teachings on morality, emphasising the transformative power of love and forgiveness in our relationships. The verse of the day challenges us to love our enemies, embodying the divine love that surpasses human understanding.

Genesis 11:10–32 traces the genealogy from Shem to Abram, laying the foundation for God's call to Abram in Genesis 12. Abram is called to leave his country, his people, and his father's household, stepping out in faith to follow God's promise of blessing and making him a great nation.

As Abram and his nephew Lot journey together, Genesis 13 unfolds the importance of trusting in God's provision. Abram's decision to prioritise unity and trust in God's guidance demonstrates the righteousness that God desires in our choices.

The verse of the day from Matthew 5:44–45a challenges us to extend love even to our enemies, mirroring the Father's unconditional love. As we navigate relationships, make choices, and step out in faith, may our lives reflect the transformative power of love, obedience, and trust in God. May we be known as children of our heavenly Father, embodying the righteousness that flows from a heart surrendered to His will. Amen.

 

ASCRIBE TO THE LORD: WORSHIP IN SPLENDOR

Psalms 96:7 invites us to ascribe glory and strength to the Lord, recognizing His majesty and power. This act of worship is a posture of awe and reverence, acknowledging His worthiness. It also calls us to trust in His power, acknowledging that our true strength comes from Him.

This act of surrender, trusting in His grace, is essential in a world that often emphasizes self-sufficiency. Worship in splendor is a life of devotion, reflecting the glory and strength of the Lord in our actions, thoughts, and relationships. 

The call to "ascribe to the LORD" extends to every aspect of our lives, and we should carry the spirit of worship with us.

BLESS THE LORD, O MY SOUL

Psalm 103:2 is a profound call to gratitude and acknowledgement of the countless blessings our gracious God bestows upon us. It encourages us to engage in outward worship and cultivate a deep, soul-level response to His goodness. 

The second part urges us to actively remember and reflect on the goodness of our Lord, fostering gratitude. The psalmist encourages us to remember the manifold benefits of our Lord, cultivating a spirit of gratitude that transforms our perspective and draws us closer to the One who is worthy of all our worship - Jesus Christ.
