Day 65: Chronological Bible in One Year Devotion:
In Numbers 22-24, we read the story of Balak, king of Moab, and Balaam, a diviner hired to curse the people of Israel. Balak feared the Israelites because of their growing strength and sought to destroy them through spiritual means. However, what unfolds in these chapters is a powerful demonstration of God’s sovereignty and His unchangeable plan to bless His people, no matter the opposition.
In Numbers 22, Balak sends for Balaam, requesting that he curse the Israelites. Although Balaam is warned by God not to go, the allure of wealth and honor compels him to journey toward Moab. Along the way, God’s anger is kindled against Balaam for his duplicity, and He sends an angel to confront him. Balaam’s donkey, who can see the angel, stops and refuses to move, causing Balaam to beat it. In an incredible moment, the donkey is given the ability to speak, rebuking Balaam for his blindness and lack of understanding. This part of the story reminds us that God can use even the unexpected and the humble to reveal His truth and that our desires must always align with His will.
Despite his intent to curse Israel, Balaam is forced by God to speak blessings instead. Numbers 23 reveals Balaam’s first two attempts to curse the Israelites, which are overruled by God. In his prophetic words, Balaam declares that God has blessed Israel and that no curse can stand against them. He reminds Balak and all who hear that God is not a man who lies or changes His mind. What He has spoken will surely come to pass. No matter the schemes of the enemy, God’s word of blessing over His people cannot be reversed.
Numbers 24 shows Balaam’s final effort to curse Israel, but once again, God’s Spirit moves him to bless them instead. In this moment, Balaam proclaims that Israel’s future is bright, foreseeing their victories and dominance in the land. Even though Balak grows furious, Balaam can only speak what God has commanded. Through Balaam’s story, we learn that no one can thwart God’s plans for His people. The blessings God has decreed are irrevocable, and His promises are steadfast.
The overarching message of these chapters is one of God’s unstoppable plan. When God has spoken blessings over His people, nothing can reverse them. Like Israel, we too can rest in the truth that God’s promises to us are sure and unchangeable. The enemy may try to oppose, discourage, or derail us, but as long as we trust in God, His plan will always prevail.
Just as Balaam’s mouth could only declare blessings, we too are reminded that God is in control of every situation. Even when it seems like forces are working against us, God can turn what is meant for harm into something that ultimately glorifies Him. His word never returns void, and His blessings will stand no matter what.
As we reflect on the events of Balaam and Balak, let us remember that God’s promises over our lives are unshakable. His faithfulness endures through every trial, and no curse, no matter how powerful, can undo the blessings He has spoken.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your unchangeable promises and sovereign plan. Help me to trust that no opposition can undo the blessings You have decreed. Strengthen my faith, and remind me that You are always in control, even when challenges arise. May Your will always prevail in my life. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
