SERVING GOD IS KEY!

A portrait of Bible Quote for Today from Roman 12:11

Romans 12:11 is a verse that challenges us to live with passion and purpose for God. It says, "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord."NIV

What does it mean to be zealous and fervent in spirit? Zeal is a strong enthusiasm or devotion for something or someone. Fervor is an intense emotion or feeling that motivates us to action. To be zealous and fervent in spirit means to have a burning desire to please God and to do His will.

How can we cultivate this kind of attitude in our lives? The verse gives us three practical ways:

Serving the Lord. This means to use our gifts and abilities to honor God and to bless others. We are not to be lazy or indifferent, but to work hard and do everything as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23). Serving the Lord also means to obey His commands and to follow His guidance. We are not to be rebellious or stubborn, but to submit to His authority and to trust His wisdom.

Being joyful in hope. This means to have a positive outlook and a confident expectation of what God has promised us. We are not to be pessimistic or discouraged, but to rejoice in the hope of His glory and His return (Romans 5:2; Titus 2:13). Being joyful in hope also means to have a grateful heart and a contented spirit. We are not to be complaining or dissatisfied, but to give thanks in all circumstances and to be content with what we have (1 Thessalonians 5:18; Hebrews 13:5).

Being patient in affliction. This means to endure hardship and suffering with perseverance and faith. We are not to be impatient or anxious, but to wait on the Lord and to rely on His strength (Isaiah 40:31; Philippians 4:13). Being patient in affliction also means to have a humble attitude and a forgiving spirit. We are not to be proud or bitter, but to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand and to forgive those who hurt us (1 Peter 5:6; Ephesians 4:32).

These three ways of living are not easy, but they are possible by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. He is the one who gives us the zeal and the fervor that we need to serve the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). He is the one who fills us with joy and peace as we trust in Him (Romans 15:13). He is the one who helps us to endure and overcome every trial and temptation that we face (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Let us therefore pray that God would renew our zeal and fervor for Him every day. Let us ask Him to help us serve Him faithfully, joyfully, and patiently. Let us remember that He is worthy of all our love, praise, and devotion. Amen.
