Restore Us, Unite Us, Teach Us to Love

Dearly Beloved,

DAY 295 – CHRONOLOGICAL BIBLE'S STORY IN ONE YEAR PLAN

1 CORINTHIANS 12–14 & PSALM 80

Opening Scene

A vineyard once flourishing under a gardener's care now lies exposed and broken. Its walls are torn down, its branches trampled, and its fruit threatened. The psalmist cries, “Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine.” In Corinth, another kind of damage threatens God's people: believers are competing over spiritual gifts, seeking recognition instead of building one another up. Both scenes call for restoration—God's people must return to Him and learn to live together according to His purpose.

The Story Unfolds

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul explains that spiritual gifts come from the same Spirit, who distributes them for the common good. The church is one body with many members. No member can claim independence, and none should be despised. Each has a place and a purpose in Christ's body.

In chapter 13, Paul reveals the more excellent way: love. Tongues, prophecy, knowledge and extraordinary faith are nothing without love. Love is patient and kind; it does not envy or boast. Gifts serve the church for a season, but love never fails.

In chapter 14, Paul calls believers to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy for strengthening, encouragement and comfort. Worship must be understandable and orderly, so that the church is edified and unbelievers may recognise God's presence.

Psalm 80 portrays Israel as a vineyard brought out of Egypt and planted by God. Yet its walls have been broken, and its people suffer. The psalmist pleads three times for restoration: “Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.” Their hope rests in God's mercy and the restoration He alone can bring.

Spiritual Insight

These readings show that God desires a people who are spiritually equipped, united in purpose and governed by love. The Spirit gives gifts, but love determines how those gifts should be used. Worship is not a stage for personal recognition; it is an opportunity to strengthen the body of Christ.

Psalm 80 reminds us that spiritual fruitfulness depends on God's presence. Just as Israel's vineyard needed the Lord's restoring hand, the church needs His Spirit to heal division and renew its witness.

Gifts may reveal what God has entrusted to us, but love reveals whether we are using those gifts according to His heart.

Life Application

Use your gifts to strengthen others, not to compete for attention. Practise patience, humility and love. Contribute to worship in ways that encourage the church, and pray for restoration wherever division or spiritual weakness has taken root.

Prayer

Father, restore my heart and renew Your church. Teach me to use the gifts You have given me with humility and love. Remove pride, jealousy and division. Let my words encourage others, my service strengthen Your people, and Your presence bring fruitfulness to our lives. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Challenge of the Day

Identify one gift, skill or opportunity God has given you. Use it today to encourage, serve or strengthen someone without seeking recognition. Also pray specifically for unity and restoration in your church.
