2 Chronicles 10, 11, 12 & Psalm 28
Opening Scene
A new chapter begins in Israel's history as Solomon's son, Rehoboam, becomes king. Faced with an important decision, Rehoboam must choose between wise counsel and prideful advice. His choice leads to the division of the kingdom. Psalm 28 provides a contrasting response, teaching us to seek God's help, trust His strength, and praise Him for hearing our prayers.
The Story Unfolds
In 2 Chronicles 10, Rehoboam becomes king after Solomon's death. The people ask him to lighten the heavy burden his father had placed on them. Rehoboam first consults the older advisers, who wisely encourage him to serve the people and speak kindly to them.
However, Rehoboam rejects their counsel and listens instead to the younger men who encourage him to respond harshly. His prideful decision causes ten tribes to rebel, leading to the division of Israel into two kingdoms.
In 2 Chronicles 11, Rehoboam prepares to fight against the northern tribes, but God sends a message through the prophet Shemaiah, telling him not to fight because the division has occurred according to God's sovereign purpose. Rehoboam obeys and returns home.
The chapter also records how priests and Levites from throughout Israel come to Judah because Jeroboam rejects the proper worship of God. For a time, Rehoboam strengthens his kingdom and follows the ways established by David and Solomon.
In 2 Chronicles 12, however, Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah become unfaithful to God. As a result, Shishak, king of Egypt, attacks Jerusalem. When Rehoboam and the leaders humble themselves, God shows mercy and prevents their complete destruction. Nevertheless, Judah experiences the consequences of its unfaithfulness.
In Psalm 28, David cries to God for help, refusing to remain silent in his distress. He asks God not to treat him like the wicked but to judge righteously. Then the psalm turns into praise as David declares with confidence that God has heard his cry for mercy.
Spiritual Insight
Pride can cause us to reject wise counsel and make decisions that affect not only ourselves but also many others. Rehoboam's story reminds us that leadership requires humility and a willingness to listen.
Yet even after failure, humility can open the door to God's mercy. When Rehoboam and the leaders humbled themselves, God responded with compassion.
Psalm 28 reminds us that we never have to face life's challenges alone. God hears the sincere prayers of those who call upon Him.
Life Application
Before making important decisions, seek wise and godly counsel. Do not automatically choose advice simply because it agrees with what you already want to do.
If pride, stubbornness, or disobedience has led you in the wrong direction, humble yourself before God rather than trying to defend your actions. God is merciful to those who sincerely turn back to Him.
When you feel weak or uncertain, make prayer your first response. Trust God to be your strength and shield.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me a humble heart that is willing to listen to wise counsel and follow Your direction. Protect me from pride and stubbornness, especially when making important decisions. When I fail, give me the humility to repent and return to You. Thank You for being my strength and shield. Help me to trust You and praise You for hearing my prayers. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Challenge of the Day
Think about one decision you are currently making or considering. Seek godly wisdom before acting. Ask yourself: “Am I listening because I truly want what is right, or only looking for advice that supports what I already want?” Then pray for the humility to follow God's direction.
