Day 306 – Chronological Bible's Story in One Year Plan
Acts 20–22; Psalm 91
Opening Scene
The shoreline at Miletus is filled with tears. Paul kneels among the Ephesian elders, embraces them, and speaks of the trials awaiting him in Jerusalem. He knows bonds and afflictions lie ahead, yet he refuses to turn aside from the ministry entrusted to him by Christ. Far from this gathering, Psalm 91 pictures the believer resting beneath the shadow of the Almighty, declaring, “He is my refuge and my fortress.” Paul’s journey reveals that divine refuge does not always mean escape from danger; sometimes it means courage to obey God through it.
The Story Unfolds
In Acts 20, Paul travels through Macedonia and Greece, strengthening the churches. At Troas, Eutychus falls from a window during Paul’s lengthy teaching, but Paul embraces him, and the young man is restored to life. At Miletus, Paul reminds the Ephesian elders how he served with humility, tears, and perseverance. He warns them against grievous wolves who will arise among them and urges them to shepherd God’s church faithfully. Though uncertain of what awaits him, Paul declares that he is bound in the spirit to go to Jerusalem.
In Acts 21, believers plead with Paul not to go, but he remains resolved to do the Lord’s will. In Jerusalem, accusations arise, and a crowd seizes him in the temple. Roman soldiers intervene and take him into custody. Paul’s obedience brings suffering, yet God preserves him for the testimony still to come.
Acts 22 records Paul’s defence before the crowd. He recounts his former zeal in persecuting the church, his encounter with the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus, and his commission to carry the gospel to the Gentiles. The crowd erupts when he speaks of his mission, and the authorities prepare to examine him by scourging. Paul reveals his Roman citizenship, preventing the unlawful punishment.
Psalm 91 declares God’s protection over those who dwell in His presence. He is refuge, fortress, and deliverer; His people need not live enslaved to fear. Yet the psalm’s promise is not a call to test God or presume upon safety. Paul’s journey shows trust expressed through obedience: he faces danger without abandoning his calling. God’s refuge sustains His servant, even when deliverance comes through trials rather than their immediate removal.
Spiritual Insight
God’s protection does not always remove hardship; it preserves His purpose and strengthens His people within it. Paul’s courage flows from surrender to Christ, while Psalm 91 calls believers to dwell in God, not merely seek Him in crisis. True faith rests in the Lord’s presence and obeys His calling, whether the path is peaceful or perilous.
Life Application
Serve faithfully even when obedience is costly. Do not let fear silence your testimony or pressure turn you from God’s will. Seek refuge in the Lord through prayer and trust, while acting with wisdom and integrity. Strengthen others in faith, and remain alert to teachings that distort the gospel.
Prayer
Almighty God, be my refuge and fortress. Give me Paul’s courage to fulfil the calling You have placed upon my life. Keep me faithful through opposition, strengthen me when fear rises, and help me trust Your presence more than my circumstances. Let my life bear a bold and faithful witness to Jesus Christ. Amen.
Challenge of the Day
Identify one act of obedience or testimony you have delayed because of fear. Pray for courage, then take a wise, practical step forward. Encourage someone who is facing a difficult path. Remember: God’s refuge is not always an escape from the storm; it is His faithful presence as we walk through it.
