Courage to Obey and the God Who Gives Victory

Joshua 8:1 is the Bible verse of the day
Dearly Beloved,

Day 70 – Chronological Bible Story in One Year Plan

Opening Scene

The Israelites have finally crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land. The land their ancestors longed to see is now before them. Yet before any battle begins, God calls them to pause. At Gilgal, the new generation is circumcised, renewing their covenant with God. They celebrate the Passover, remembering His faithfulness. Soon after, the manna that sustained them for forty years stops. The wilderness season is over. A new chapter has begun.

The Story Unfolds

As Joshua prepares for battle, he encounters a mysterious man standing with a drawn sword. When Joshua asks whose side he is on, the man replies that he is the Commander of the Lord’s army. Joshua falls in reverence, realizing that victory will come not through human strength but through God’s authority.

The first city before them is Jericho, heavily fortified and seemingly impossible to conquer. But God gives unusual instructions: march around the city once each day for six days, with priests carrying the ark and blowing trumpets. On the seventh day, they are to march around it seven times and shout.

The Israelites obey. When the shout rises, the walls of Jericho collapse. God gives them a miraculous victory. However, in the next battle against the small city of Ai, Israel suffers defeat. Joshua is devastated until God reveals the reason: a man named Achan secretly kept some items that God had commanded them to destroy.

Sin in the camp had weakened the entire nation. After the sin is exposed and dealt with, God reassures Joshua and gives a new strategy. This time, Israel defeats Ai and takes the city. The victory restores their confidence and reminds them that obedience to God is essential.

Joshua then gathers the people at Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. There, he reads the Law of Moses to the entire assembly—men, women, children, and foreigners. It is a moment of recommitment to God’s Word as the foundation of their new life in the land.

Spiritual Insight

Joshua 5, 6, 7, 8 reveals a powerful truth: victory comes through obedience, not human strength. The fall of Jericho demonstrates that God can bring down the strongest walls when His people follow His instructions. Yet the defeat at Ai shows how hidden sin can hinder progress and bring unexpected failure.

God desires both faith and purity among His people. When Israel corrected their disobedience and returned to God’s instructions, He restored their victory.

These chapters also remind us that before every major conquest, God prepares His people spiritually. Circumcision, Passover, and the reading of the Law all emphasized that their identity and success were rooted in their relationship with Him.

Life Application

Sometimes God’s instructions may not make logical sense, just as marching around Jericho did not appear to be a military strategy. Yet obedience releases God’s power.

This passage also challenges believers to examine their hearts. Hidden compromise can block progress and bring spiritual defeat. When we confess and correct our ways, God restores His grace and direction.

Finally, victory is sustained by continual alignment with God’s Word. Like Joshua reading the Law to the people, we must regularly return to Scripture for guidance and strength.

Prayer

Lord God, help me to obey Your voice even when I do not fully understand Your ways. Reveal anything in my heart that may hinder my walk with You. Teach me to trust Your Word and follow Your guidance so that my life may reflect Your victory and glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Challenge of the Day

Identify one area where God is asking you to obey Him more fully. Take a practical step today to align your actions with His Word, trusting that obedience will lead to lasting victory.
