Day 249 – Chronological Bible's Story in One Year Plan
2 Chronicles 26, 27, 28 & Psalm 34
Opening Scene
The reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, and Ahaz reveal how leadership can be shaped by either humility or pride. Success can become dangerous when it leads us away from dependence on God, while difficult circumstances can expose where we truly place our trust. Psalm 34 offers a powerful invitation to seek the Lord, trust His goodness, and find refuge in Him.
The Story Unfolds
In 2 Chronicles 26, Uzziah becomes king of Judah and seeks God during the early years of his reign. God gives him success in battle, agriculture, construction, and national development. His fame spreads far beyond Judah.
However, Uzziah's success eventually leads to pride. He enters the temple and attempts to burn incense—an act reserved for the priests. When the priests confront him, he becomes angry. As a consequence, he is struck with leprosy and remains separated from the palace for the rest of his life. His story is a serious warning that success without humility can lead to downfall.
In 2 Chronicles 27, Jotham, Uzziah's son, becomes king. He does what is right before the Lord and grows powerful because he carefully orders his ways before God. He strengthens cities and defeats the Ammonites. His reign demonstrates the strength that comes from steady and disciplined faithfulness.
In 2 Chronicles 28, Ahaz becomes king and leads Judah into deep spiritual decline. He embraces idolatry and refuses to trust God even when facing military threats. Instead of turning to the Lord, he seeks help from foreign powers. His choices bring further trouble and humiliation to Judah.
In Psalm 34, David praises God as the One who hears, delivers, and protects those who seek Him. He invites others to experience God's goodness:
“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”
David teaches that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and rescues those who trust in Him.
Spiritual Insight
Success is a test of character. Uzziah sought God while he was weak, but pride entered his heart when he became strong. The blessings of God should draw us closer to Him, not make us feel independent of Him.
Psalm 34 reminds us that when we are broken, afraid, or in trouble, God is not distant. He hears the cries of those who seek Him and becomes a refuge for the humble.
Life Application
Remain humble when things are going well. Continue praying, seeking God's guidance, and accepting correction.
When difficulties come, do not respond like Ahaz by looking everywhere except to God. Seek Him first and allow Him to guide your decisions.
If you are going through pain or disappointment, remember that God is close to the brokenhearted. Your brokenness is not hidden from Him.
(Also reflect on 2 Chronicles 26:16: “But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall.”)
Prayer
Heavenly Father, keep my heart humble in every season, especially when I experience success. Protect me from the pride that makes me forget my dependence on You. When difficulties arise, help me seek You first rather than relying only on human solutions. Draw near to me in every moment of weakness and teach me to find refuge in Your goodness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Challenge of the Day
Think about a recent success, achievement, or blessing in your life. Thank God specifically for it, and ask yourself: “Has this success made me more dependent on God or more independent?” Choose one practical way to remain humble and connected to Him today.
