Day 247 – Chronological Bible's in One Year Plan
Opening Scene
The reigns of Jehoram and Ahaziah reveal how quickly a nation can be affected when leaders choose the wrong path and allow ungodly influences to shape their decisions. Psalm 32 offers a powerful contrast, showing the blessing and freedom that come when sin is honestly confessed and forgiven.
The Story Unfolds
In 2 Chronicles 21, Jehoram, the son of Jehoshaphat, becomes king of Judah. Unlike his father, he turns away from God and follows the sinful ways of the kings of Israel. He is strongly influenced by his marriage to Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel.
Jehoram strengthens his position through violence, killing several of his own brothers. During his reign, Edom and Libnah rebel against Judah. The nation experiences instability because Jehoram abandons the ways of the Lord.
The prophet Elijah sends Jehoram a message of judgment, warning him about the consequences of his wickedness. Jehoram eventually suffers a severe illness and dies after a troubled reign.
In 2 Chronicles 22, Jehoram's son Ahaziah becomes king. He too follows the influence of Ahab's household and makes destructive choices. He allies himself with Joram of Israel and becomes involved in events that lead to his death during Jehu's judgment against Ahab's family.
After Ahaziah's death, his mother Athaliah attempts to destroy the royal family and seize the throne. However, the young prince Joash is secretly rescued and hidden, preserving the line of David.
In Psalm 32, David describes the blessing of having sin forgiven. He recalls the heavy burden he felt when he kept silent about his sin, but when he confessed it to God, he experienced forgiveness and relief.
The psalm teaches that confession is not meant to crush us—it is the pathway to restoration. David declares that God is a hiding place who protects and surrounds His people with songs of deliverance.
Spiritual Insight
The people we allow to influence us can shape the direction of our lives. Jehoram and Ahaziah demonstrate the danger of allowing wrong relationships and ungodly counsel to determine our values.
Psalm 32 reminds us that when we fail, we do not need to hide from God. What we conceal can become a burden, but what we confess to God can be forgiven.
Life Application
Examine the voices and relationships influencing your decisions. Choose friendships, partnerships, and counsel that strengthen your faith and character rather than weaken them.
When you sin or make a mistake, do not remain trapped in guilt or silence. Confess honestly to God, receive His forgiveness, and allow Him to restore you.
(Also meditate on Psalm 32:5: “I acknowledged my sin to You... and You forgave the guilt of my sin.”)
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to recognize the influences that are shaping my life. Give me wisdom to choose relationships and counsel that draw me closer to You. When I fail, give me the humility to confess my sin rather than hiding it. Thank You for Your mercy and forgiveness. Restore my heart and guide me along the right path. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Challenge of the Day
Take a few quiet moments today to examine your heart. Is there anything you have been hiding from God through silence or avoidance? Confess it honestly to Him and receive His forgiveness. Then consider one influence in your life and ask whether it is drawing you closer to God or further away from Him.
