Day 252 – Chronological Bible's Story in One Year Plan
2 Chronicles 34, 35, 36 & Psalm 37
Opening Scene
The final chapters of 2 Chronicles take us through Judah's last years as a kingdom. We see a remarkable spiritual revival under Josiah, followed by the tragic consequences of continued disobedience and eventual exile. Yet even in judgment, God preserves hope and prepares the way for restoration. Psalm 37 encourages us not to be discouraged by evil but to trust patiently in the Lord.
The Story Unfolds
In 2 Chronicles 34, Josiah becomes king at a young age and chooses to seek the Lord. As he grows, he removes idols and false places of worship throughout Judah.
During repairs to the temple, the Book of the Law is discovered. When Josiah hears its words, he is deeply convicted and humbles himself before God. He realizes how far the nation has drifted from God's commands.
Josiah gathers the people and leads them in renewing their covenant with God. His response demonstrates the power of God's Word to awaken repentance and bring spiritual reform.
In 2 Chronicles 35, Josiah leads the people in celebrating the Passover with great devotion. The celebration becomes one of the most remarkable Passovers recorded in Judah's history.
However, Josiah later makes a decision without seeking God's direction and goes into battle against Pharaoh Neco of Egypt. He is wounded and dies, and Judah mourns deeply for him.
In 2 Chronicles 36, Judah's final kings lead the nation further away from God. Despite repeated warnings through God's prophets, the people refuse to turn back. Eventually, Babylon conquers Jerusalem, destroys the temple, and takes many people into exile.
Yet the book does not end without hope. God moves the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia, who issues a decree allowing the exiles to return and rebuild the temple. Even after judgment and destruction, God's purposes continue.
In Psalm 37, David encourages God's people not to become discouraged when evil people seem to prosper. Their success is temporary, but those who trust in the Lord have an eternal inheritance.
David repeatedly calls us to trust in the Lord, do good, delight in Him, commit our way to Him, and wait patiently for Him.
Spiritual Insight
God's Word can bring renewal when we receive it with humility and obedience. Josiah did not merely listen to the Book of the Law—he allowed it to change his life and leadership.
Psalm 37 teaches that appearances can be deceiving. Evil may seem successful for a time, but God's justice is certain. Our responsibility is not to become consumed with envy or anger but to remain faithful and trust God's timing.
Life Application
Let God's Word correct you, not merely comfort you. When Scripture reveals an area that needs to change, respond with humility and practical obedience.
Do not become discouraged by the apparent success of those who do wrong. Focus instead on faithfully doing what God has asked of you.
Trust God's timing. Some answers, justice, and breakthroughs may not come immediately, but God sees the whole story.
(Also meditate on Psalm 37:5: “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this.”)
Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me a heart like Josiah's—humble and responsive to Your Word. When You reveal something in my life that needs to change, give me the courage to obey. Help me not to become discouraged or envious when evil appears to prosper. Teach me to trust Your justice, commit my way to You, and wait patiently for Your timing. Keep me faithful even when I do not yet see the outcome. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Challenge of the Day
Choose one verse or instruction from God's Word today and put it into deliberate practice. Then identify one situation that is causing you frustration because of another person's apparent success or wrongdoing. Release it to God and consciously choose to trust His justice and timing.
