Day 263 – Chronological Bible's Story in One Year Plan
Opening Scene
The temple foundation had been laid, but the work still looked small compared with the glory of what once stood in Jerusalem. Discouragement could easily have settled over the builders. Then Zechariah was awakened to another vision: a golden lampstand, two olive trees, and oil flowing continually.
The message was clear—God's work would not be completed by human strength alone.
The Story Unfolds
In Zechariah 4, Zerubbabel was reminded:
«“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”»
The mountain standing before him would become a plain. The hands that laid the foundation would also finish the temple. God was teaching His people that the success of His purposes depends ultimately on His Spirit.
Zechariah 5 then reveals two disturbing visions. A flying scroll represented judgment against those who steal and swear falsely, while the woman in the ephah represented wickedness being carried away from the land. Restoration required more than rebuilding the temple; sin had to be confronted and removed.
In chapter 6, four chariots went out from between two mountains of bronze, symbolizing God's sovereign activity throughout the earth. Zechariah was then instructed to crown Joshua the high priest, with the promise concerning “the BRANCH,” who would build the temple and bear royal glory.
Psalm 48 echoes this confidence by celebrating Jerusalem as the city of the great King. God is in her midst; therefore she will not be ultimately overcome.
Spiritual Insight
These readings reveal a powerful progression:
God provides the Spirit → God removes wickedness → God establishes His rule.
The temple would not be completed merely through human determination. God's Spirit would accomplish what human strength could not.
Likewise, genuine restoration cannot coexist comfortably with deliberate sin. God desires both rebuilding and cleansing.
Psalm 48 lifts our eyes beyond the physical city to the God who makes it secure. Jerusalem's true strength was never its walls. Its security was the presence of the LORD.
Life Application
Do not depend solely on your ability, resources, connections, or strength to accomplish what God has called you to do.
When the task seems like a mountain, remember: “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit.”
But also examine what needs to be removed. Ask God to cleanse your motives, habits, relationships, and decisions from anything that contradicts His Word.
Build with His Spirit. Walk in holiness. Trust His sovereignty.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to depend on Your Spirit rather than my strength. Remove every form of wickedness that hinders my walk with You. Establish Your purposes in my life and make me faithful in the work You have given me. May Your presence be my security and Your glory my greatest desire. Amen.
Challenge of the Day
Identify one “mountain” before you and surrender it to God. Then identify one thing that needs to be removed from your life and take a deliberate step toward cleansing and obedience.
Build by His Spirit, not merely by your strength.
